Love your Enemies

"But I say to you, love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you."
MATTHEW 5:44

Jesus emphasizes the importance of unconditional love and forgiveness. He encourages His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them, illustrating the concept of divine love that is inclusive and universal. He points out that God’s love is impartial, making the sun rise and the rain fall on both the good and the bad. Jesus also challenges His followers to go beyond the norm of loving those who love them and greeting only their brothers and sisters. He calls them to a higher standard of love, one that even includes those who might be considered enemies. His teaching ends with a call to perfection, to strive to emulate the perfect love of the heavenly Father.

43 Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brothers and sisters only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? 48 So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:43-48)

In the heart of the sermon, on a mount so high, Jesus spoke to His disciples, under the open sky. "Love your neighbor, but not just those nearby, love your enemies too," He said, "and here's why. Pray for those who persecute, let forgiveness lie, that you may be children of your Father in the sky. He makes His sun rise, on both the shy and the sly, and sends the rain to fall, on both the low and the high. If you love only those who love you, then why? Even tax collectors do the same, they comply. And if you greet only your kin, then you deny the universal love, that under the heavens lie. So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is nigh, His love is unconditional, it does not quantify. It's a call to a higher love, that we must apply in our hearts, in our souls, until the day we die."

Heavenly Father, who makes the sun rise on all, on the good and the bad, on the great and the small. We pray for the strength to love without a wall, to love our enemies, and heed Your call. Help us to pray for those who cause us pain, to find in our hearts forgiveness, again and again. May we be Your children, in sunshine and rain, for You cause it to fall on the just and the inane. If we love only those who love us, what gain? Even tax collectors do the same, it's plain. Help us to greet all, break the chain, for in Your perfect love, we remain. So help us strive for perfection, in every lane just as You are perfect, let this truth sustain. Do not forsake us, in joy or in strain, in Your perfect love, we wish to remain. All these we ask and pray in Jesus name. Amen.

This passage emphasizes the importance of observing God’s commandments with all your heart and soul. It speaks about an agreement between God and His people, where they promise to walk in His ways and observe His statutes, commandments, and decrees. In return, God promises to make them His own people, raising them high in praise, renown, and glory above all other nations.

16 Moses spoke to the people, saying: “This day the Lord, your God, commands you to observe these statutes and decrees. Be careful, then, to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 Today you are making this agreement with the Lord: he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees, and to hearken to his voice. 18 And today the Lord is making this agreement with you: you are to be a people peculiarly his own, as he promised you; and provided you keep all his commandments, 19 he will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory above all other nations he has made, and you will be a people sacred to the Lord, your God, as he promised.” (Deuteronomy 26:16-19)

In the heart of the desert, 'neath the burning sun, Moses spoke to the people, his voice steady and strong. "Observe these decrees," he said, "each and every one, with all your heart, with all your soul, let your faith be long. Today, an agreement with the Lord you make, to walk in His ways, His commandments to take. Heed His voice, let not your resolve shake, for He is your God, a bond that will not break. Today, the Lord makes a pact with you, promising to keep you as His own, His chosen few. Keep His commandments, to your faith be true and He will raise you high, in glory anew. Above all nations, you will stand tall, in praise and renown, you will enthrall. Sacred to the Lord, He will not let you fall, for you are His people, He has heard your call."

Lord, our God, today we stand before You with hearts open wide, to Your statutes true. Help us observe them, in all that we do. With all our heart, with all our soul, to You we're due. Today, we make this agreement, Lord, with You, to walk in Your ways, Your commandments to pursue. Help us hearken to Your voice, in the morning dew. You are our God, to this truth we're glued. Today, You make this agreement, Lord, with us, we are Your people, in this we trust. Help us keep Your commandments, without any fuss and You will raise us high, in praise, renown, and thus. Above all nations, we will rise, in Your glory, under Your skies. we are sacred to You, Lord, our ties, as You promised, hear our cries. All these we ask and pray in Jesus name. Amen.

This passage is a beautiful expression of devotion and commitment to following the laws and decrees of the Lord. It speaks of the blessings that come from walking blamelessly in the law of the Lord, observing His decrees, and seeking Him with all one’s heart. It also expresses a desire for steadfastness in keeping His statutes and a commitment to giving thanks when learning His just ordinances. The passage ends with a plea for the Lord not to forsake the speaker, highlighting the deep reliance on and trust in God’s guidance and presence.

1 Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are they who observe his decrees, who seek him with all their heart. 4 You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept. 5 Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping your statutes! 7 I will give you thanks with an upright heart, when I have learned your just ordinances. 8 I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me. (Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8)

Blessed are they, who walk in light, in the law of the Lord, with all their might. Their way is blameless, their hearts are bright, observing His decrees, from morning till night. With all their heart, they seek His face, in every moment, in every place. His precepts they keep, with gentle grace, Oh, to be firm in His embrace! With an upright heart, thanks they give, learning His ordinances, in His word they live. His statutes they keep, their sins they sieve, "Do not forsake me, Lord," they plead, "in You, I believe."

Lord, our God, we seek to walk Your way, to be blameless in Your sight, to not stray. Blessed are we, who observe Your decrees, who seek You with all our heart, on bended knees. You have commanded us, Your precepts to keep, Help us, O Lord, to dive in Your love, so deep. Oh, that we might be firm, in keeping Your statutes, Guide us, O Lord, through life's many attributes. With an upright heart, we give You thanks, learning Your just ordinances, filling our spiritual tanks. We promise to keep Your statutes, to hold them dear, do not forsake us, Lord, keep us near. With much love and thanksgiving we pray in Jesus name. Amen.
